About The Nascence to End Work ...The NEW:

“Nascence” means “birth.” To birth a movement to end work is the work of The NEW.

This site inaugurates the movement to end wage work. Through arguments, ideas, and actions explored and discussed on this site, our collective efforts to create a very different form of social organization – premised on our future freedom without bosses – will be evolved and pushed forward.

In brief, it will be argued here that there are now no technical or material barriers to ending wage work, and that if our children are to have a healthy planet and healthy human inter-relationships, wethose of us who do the work that makes the human world keep rolling along – must reclaim responsibility for running things ourselves. Once those points are clearly and indisputably established, we can at least look the problem of our continued labor boldly in the eye and recognize that our choice is simply between courage and cowardice. And despite those value-laden words, there’s no judgment implied here, only urgency: “now is the time for us to wake up.”

We ask for your ideas and involvement in developing this website and, most importantly, growing this movement.

Why we need the Nascence to End Work:

The current social arrangement has led to a cultural crisis of caring. On a global scale, we’re experiencing the extension of the commodity form to everything, removing from our personal understanding how the goods we use were made, getting in the way of honest relationships with each other – engulfing and diminishing all of life…unless – unless we decide to make a better world.

What this extension of the commodity form, this separation of conception from execution – especially as we now make fewer and fewer of the commodities we use in our lives, importing ever more – means on the personal level is an end to wholeness and an end to a sense of agency in determining our own lives.

The job serves to remind us always of our dependent status through bosses, hierarchy, authoritarianism, disciplining, the note in the personnel file – with a veneer of scientific authority (via so-called “management theory”) bestowed on it all.

The separation of conception from execution means that we are made into instruments that realize the dreams of others, never our own. It means we have no time or energy to make sense of the world or to imagine how to change it through the realization of our own dreams. Each of us longs to be recognized in our non-culture of invisibility.

Decisions that affect our lives happen behind the scenes. We happen behind the scenes – no one knows our true selves, save a fate-assigned few.

“We are too big for jobs” – but the longer we’re in a job, the smaller we get.

I’m sure we could make an equation of it:
Size of the soul = the reciprocal of number of years worked times the ratio of total deferred dreams to the number of days of work-related depression. (I’m starting to feel depressed just thinking about it.)

The job keeps us from developing our wholeness and our wholeness is what makes life worth living. It keeps us from uniting with our fellows, learning from our ancestors, and living respectfully with all life.

So…what can we do?

The first thing we must do is to allow this truth to sink in: there are no technological or material barriers to ending wage work and to our beginning to create our future freedom without bosses right now.

We are at a crossroads.

The question today – as we look square in the face the coming consequences of climate change, peak oil, peak water, resource shortages, and the ever-widening disparities between them that got and them that not – is no longer “what can we do?” The question today is “what must we do?” Our children and theirs must have a healthy planet, with healthy, joyful humans sharing it respectfully with all life.

It is no longer an option. We must wake up.
