“The Phoenix”
by Pamela Satterwhite
...the...light...brought out the brightness of the apples on the old scant-leaved boughs...
My son’s father was fond of succulents. I never knew why. So when we arrived in Oakland, California from Detroit – me, very pregnant, he, very much the squirrel who plants his nuts broadly and forgets where he buried them, very tentative, very one-foot-in-one-foot-out, the very embodiment of coitus interruptus – The Green here amazed us both.
We went on long walks and when we found succulents he tended to gather.
They never did much for me, but he loved them – loved the idea of living things being tough, not needing much, asking little but very appreciative of what it did get.
Me, I lusted for lush-life, dense foliage, profusion, exuberance, abundance, enough for all…
But he loved them so I’d gather facts about succulents as offerings to lay at his feet (always a mistake – never lay offerings at anyone’s feet…ever)…which is how I learned that the agave’s parting gift to the world is its bloom, a tall, grand flower it sends up as it dies.
I tend to pay attention to such flowers…I tend to want to find them, feed them…fertilize them…and wait for the general profusion that results.
