“Eating What The Earth Gives Me”

by Pamela Satterwhite

My body has arrived at toxic overload. If I give it anything processed – even those innocent-seeming rice crackers with no ingredients requiring a dictionary to decode – the menagerie I host immediately convenes a meeting to vote on how to punish me. And they are so efficient about it that I’ve learned not to argue but rather to let them lead.

My neighbor Mrs. Trotter says that there’s something a little wild about me and I agree – there’s something a little wild about all of us, but I’ve just stopped fighting it.

So the pugnacious green things pushing themselves up to me that I formerly ignored I’m considering a little longer now…now that I have the time to. Now, I not only see the come-hither look of the plant that sends its purple cluster out on long stems and tastes of garlic, but I actually heed. Or that variety of greens that some unknown planted last year in the traffic circle that’s really coming into its own…now I seize and cook with eggs. All of a sudden I see life bursting out everywhere and my menagerie has taken over my decision-making.

Now I find myself longing to make a deal with a hen or two: your eggs (just a few) for my love (a lot).

I have a good friend experiencing toxic overload too. I proselytize but he doesn’t believe me. I whisper… “eat oatmeal…with sunflower seeds…and almonds…eat oatmeal every day ’til your stomach heals…” Instead some doctor has told him he mustn’t eat carbohydrates for some reason I cannot grasp, and he closes his ears to my whispering.

We’re trained to use up our bodies just as this system uses up the earth…it’s all of a piece as we are earth.

This is a mistake.

Love the earth, and it will love you back.

Give your body life if you want to live.

Life in,…
