“The Plum Tree”

by Pamela Satterwhite

I didn’t choose where the plum tree grew…it chose.

It came up on its own as close to sunrise, to the NEW day, as possible, as close to the children, on their way to and from the bus stop, as it could.

It sent out lots of slender branches that, come its maturity, come the full enough harvest, bent low to breaking to offer its fruit.

Some broke.

They made a narrow angle and I didn’t cut them…because the fruit was ripening…and…what if…what if it had chosen that too? …its own disfigurement, so that the children eating goddess-only-knows what ultra-processed-crunchies and drinking corn-fructose-death could pluck a plum and taste something real, full, and potent?
