“Getting Busy”

by Pamela Satterwhite

She was stretched on her back beneath the pear tree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the gold of the sun and the panting breath of the breeze when the inaudible voice of it all came to her. She saw a dust-bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the thousand sister-calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree from root to tiniest branch creaming in every blossom and frothing with delight. (Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God)

Apparently we’ve been proverbially misled – bees aren’t ‘busy’ at all, they’re actually pretty laid-back, pacific souls. But propaganda is propaganda, sensible or not. No sense tossing out a perfectly good lever.

So…is ‘getting busy’ hammering away at a dead horse? Setting up straw men? Puffing up balloons with hot air? Or is it a visiting-flower-to-flower, never certain what will be found, or if there’s anything to be found at all, but trusting that there will?

There’s a sensuousness to the right story…because the way of things is sensuous – lush with life.

So how does ‘change’ happen in freedom?

There’s an element of mystery, an element of risk, an element of ‘letting go’ and chancing with the wind.
